Roofing After a Storm: Do’s and Don’ts

A strong storm can damage many parts of your home, from your roof to your windows. If you sustain roof damage after a storm, there are a few things you need to do right away to help restore your home–and there are also some things you should absolutely NOT do. Read on as we share some key do’s and don’ts.

What to Do

  • Call Your Insurance Agent – This should be one of your first steps after a severe storm. Insurance claims can be complicated, so start by talking to your insurance agent about the process of filing your claim and be sure to ask for clarification on anything that doesn’t make sense to you.
  • Document the Damage – Once the bad weather clears, walk around your home and document the storm damage via photos, videos and detailed notes. Look for leaks or water spots on the ceiling and walls, and check shingles and other roofing materials on the ground.

What Not to Do

  • Don’t Hire the First Person to Knock on Your Door – Never trust a “roofer” who shows up to your home uninvited, offering to repair your roof. These “storm chasers” travel around the country to affected areas and offer quick, subpar services, only to disappear when you realize your roof has not been properly repaired.
  • Don’t Climb Onto a the Roof – Your roof may be harboring underlying damage from the storm. Don’t climb onto your roof; instead, wait for a professional to conduct a thorough investigation and then handle the repairs themselves.
